Driving in Stockholm

Wednesday August 1, 2007
Driving in Stockholm is no longer free. Yes, you heard right - similar to London's congestion charges, the Swedish capital has introduced a road tax to combat high volumes of traffic and to finance road construction and repairs.

Effective immediately, you will be charged 10-20 Kronor ($1.5 - $3) if you wish to drive through Stockholm during business hours. That is, on weekdays between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm.

There are exceptions, but they probably won't benefit most Stockholm travelers: the only ones that don't have to pay are handicapped drivers and public transportation buses.

For foreign visitors traveling to/from Stockholm with their foreign-registered cars this doesn’t really matter at all as foreign-registered vehicles are exempt from the congestion tax. In fact they can just lean back and enjoy the reduced congestion for free.

That’s a great tip, Tim! Travelers renting a car in Scandinavia can then rent it in Norway or Denmark and won’t have to pay :-)
