Female Vikings Exhumed: 1,173 Years Old

Thursday September 13, 2007
On Tuesday, Norwegian archaeologists opened a coffin containing two females from the Viking era. Scientific tests show that they had been buried almost 1,200 years ago on board the Viking ship Oseberg (now in the Oslo Museum.)

The coffin was not recently found - no, Norwegians have known about it for over a hundred years! It first came to light in 1904 and in 1948, was protectively reburied with hopes that science in the future could identify the two ladies better. Earlier this week, archaeologists picked up the coffin from the burial mound in Slagen, which is located in southeastern Norway, and are now working on the identity of both females.
