Biggest Snow Storm in 40 Years

Monday March 3, 2008
In the Icelandic Westman Islands, quite a few people got stuck this weekend. According to the Icelanders living there, the recent snow storm has been the biggest in 40 years and is comparable to the record-breaking "Great Snow" of 1968.

Search & Rescue groups have been helping people reach their homes (or work places). Not without problems there, either - the groups stated that "There was in fact so much snow that we got stuck in snowdrifts too, and we drive large vehicles." No wonder Icelanders have more than 15 different words for "snow".

The situation is normalizing now, and the current weather in Iceland should have no further impact on your travel plans. If you're planning an excursion to the Westman Islands, though, double-check with your tour operator...and bring a shovel.
