Pølser: Quick Low-Cost Lunch
Skip the restaurant in Scandinavia once in a while. Pølser are a great low-cost meal for all hungry visitors. But what are they?
A pølse is a thin pork sausage perfect for hot dogs and you can find it at hot dog stands nationwide in Denmark. It's dyed a bright red (maybe to make sure you don't overlook this tasty meal). Popular toppings you can pick for pølser are ketchup and mustard, onions, remoulade and pickles.
My favourite at Danish lunch stands, however, is the Fransk Hot Dog. "Fransk" means "French" in Danish, and refers to the French bread (a long, round baguette roll) used. Just poke a long hole into the baguette, put in remoulade or mayonnaise, and insert the Pølser sausage. Yumm!
Pølser are a low-cost meal loved by the locals as well as Denmark's visitors and you can find those sausage stands in cities and amusement parks all over Denmark. Sweden, Norway, and Finland have similar sausage stands, by the way, so you don't have to go hungry (or broke) there either. So, when you see a Pølser stand in Scandinavia, give those weenies a try. It's part of the Scandinavian food experience, I believe.
