The annual European Medieval Festival on the last weekend in August is Horsen's biggest cultural event of the year. Taking place since 1995, this is a popular annual event in Denmark:
The center of Horsens turns into the largest medieval market town in Northern Europe, offering everyone a great time with activities and traditional entertainment. The European Medieval Festival (in Danish: Europaeisk Middelalder Festival) has been attracting performers from more than ten different European countries at a time.
At night, the Danish town is illuminated by countless candles, medieval oil lamps and bonfires. Even bicycle stands and telephone booths are covered with wood to blend in with the decorations. Over 5,000 performers in medieval costumes complete this impressive experience.
Each year, the European Medieval Festival offers various shows typical for the Middle Ages, like theater, falconry and jousting. The main event for all is the Knights' Tournament. There is no charge for admission.
Fun Fact: At the European Medieval Festival, there are no plastic drinking cups. Only handmade medieval cups are available, so they go with the decoration and surroundings.
