Over 170 bands attracted 80,000 visitors last time, and numbers have been growing every year since 1971, sometimes also depending on the somewhat unpredictable weather in Denmark in early July.
The atmosphere at the Roskilde Festival is truly amazing - over several days in early July, visitors enjoy good food and drinks at low prices, have fun near one of the color-coded stages, and then sleep in tents on the campground to get ready for the next day's musical entertainment and parties. About.com's Guide to Student Travel Kathleen Cripslip includes the Roskilde Festival in her Top European Summer Concerts & Festivals.
The Roskilde Festival's orange stage is generally the main stage with the most popular artists, while smaller outdoor and indoor stages are used for bands and performers that are not quite as popular. There is even a "warm-up" starting 4 days before the actual festival dates in July, with smaller events and countless outdoor activities for all visitors.
Getting naked? Well, except for the music, the "Roskilde Naked Run" is among the most popular events at Roskilde Festival. On the Saturday of the Roskilde Festival weekend, you can see nudity and quite a few dangling body parts (naturally with extensive press coverage). The winner of the race gets free tickets for next year! If you're not into nudism, though, simply enjoy various other outdoor activities away from the Naked Run. (More Info: Nudism in Denmark)
Location: The Roskilde Festival takes place in the Danish town of Roskilde, approx. 35 km (22 mi) from Denmark's capital Copenhagen.
Tickets: Roskilde Festival Tickets and tent reservations, along with the currently scheduled music program are available directly from the Official Roskilde Festival Website. As a non-profit event, all profits from the festival are donated to humanitarian causes. I like that.
