These military bunkers in Denmark were built by the Nazis to better defend Denmark's west coast during WWII. There are around 8,000 bunkers in Denmark, at least 7,000 of them on the western coast. Many of these 60+ year old bunkers in Denmark were hidden over the years by sand, and come to light only after strong storms with large waves.
The bunkers were abandoned when the Nazis surrendered in May 1945. Before that, 10 Nazi soldiers had lived at each bunker location.
When you enter one of these bunkers as a tourist today, you might be disappointed. They have been emptied and there is not much left inside except concrete walls and a very somber atmosphere. Today, these bunkers at the beach serve as a reminder of the crimes against humanity in World War II.
The Danish newspaper Dagbladet Ringkoebing-Skjern wrote once that, "World War II and its memories will not just go away. And discoveries like these breathe new life into the story and the fascination that still surrounds this war."
