How Safe is Finland?
How Safe Finland Really Is

By , About.com Guide

As a whole, Finland is a safe country, and there are no safety issues in Helsinki either, as long as you know about pickpockets and a couple of shady spots in Helsinki which single Finland travelers may want to avoid at night. Let's find out more:

1. How Safe is Helsinki, Finland?

Helsinki, FinlandHelsinki, Finland
While Helsinki is quite safe for travelers, and has been ranked the world's second safest city, keep in mind that just like any other large city, Helsinki has its share of pickpockets and petty thieves during the busy summer travel season. Violent crime is rare in Helsinki and as long as you watch your wallet as a tourist, you don't have to worry about personal safety at all.

Are you planning on enjoying the nightlife in Helsinki? Areas single travelers should avoid at night are Kaisaniemi Park in downtown Helsinki, as well as Central Station in the Finnish capital. If something does happen, it's usually in those spots.

2. How Safe Are Finland's Rural Areas?

Much safer than Finland's capital are the rural areas of Finland - to the point that the crime rates are extremely low and general safety issues are simply related to car accidents (try not to hit a moose, and keep your headlights on).

Expect to wait a little longer for emergency services if you're in a rural area, like in any remote region. It's advisable to carry water and a flashlight with you. As a whole, Finland is a very safe country for travelers.
