How to Get from Oslo to Bergen

(and from Bergen to Oslo!)

With 480 km separating Oslo and Bergen, there are four options to get from Oslo to Bergen (or going from Bergen to Oslo). Each has its pros and cons:

1- Oslo to Bergen by Air

Flying from Oslo to Bergen is a quick 50-minute trip. Airlines covering the Oslo-Bergen route are Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), Norwegian, and Wideroe. Starting around $180, SAS usually offers the cheapest flights between Oslo and Bergen and departs many times daily. Flying may be fast and painless, but it's not exactly suitable for budget travelers.

2- Oslo to Bergen by Train

No other train ride in Europe is as scenic and as enjoyable as the train connection between Oslo and Bergen, also voted "The World's Finest" train trip. There are several departures daily. Getting from Oslo to Bergen by train takes around 7 hours - time very well spent. You can get train tickets and prices at RailEurope.com, they're around $150 for flexible round-trip tickets. Not the cheapest option between Oslo and Bergen, but certainly the most entertaining!

3- Oslo to Bergen by Car

If you're renting a car in Oslo (or in Bergen) and want to drive the 480 km to the other city, know that the faster way is road E16 all the way and it includes going through the world's longest tunnel!

However, also consider the drive along roads E134, then 40 and 7, which head out west from Oslo toward Hardangervidda National Park (towns passed: Kongsberg, Nore og Uvdal, Eidfjord.) This route will take half an hour longer, but is very scenic. From Bergen to Oslo, go east on road 7 first, then 40 and E134.

4- Oslo to Bergen by Bus

"Nor-Way Bussekspress" operates a bus connection between Oslo and Bergen, with daily morning departures in both Oslo and Bergen. Bus tickets are best bought at the main bus station in the city centers of Oslo or Bergen a few days before you go. The trip takes about 10 hours, so it's not the quickest, but possibly the cheapest method of transportation from Oslo to Bergen (or Bergen to Oslo).
