Definition: Snaefellsnes peninsula in western Iceland is one of the most popular destinations for visitors, with countless lava caves, hot springs, and waterfalls. Snaefellsnes is part of many guided tours of Iceland.

On the Snaefellsnes peninsula you'll also find Snaefellsjokull ("Snæfellsjökull"), a volcano-glacier 1,446 meters (4,744 ft) high, the highlight of Snæfellsjökull National Park. With good weather in Iceland, you can even see Snaefellsjokull from Reykjavik, 120 kilometers (75 miles) away!

To get from Reykjavik to Snaefellsnes, take Iceland's ring road (Highway 1) west and drive through Hvalfjörður tunnel. I recommend planning at least 4-6 hours for your visit.

Some of the towns worth visiting on Snaefellsnes are Ólafsvík, Búðardalur, and Grundarfjörður.

Also Known As: The Snæfellsnes peninsula
Alternate Spellings: Snæfellsnes (in Icelandic)
Common Misspellings: Snaefjellsnes, Snaefellsness
