About Gotland:

The island of Gotland, Sweden, is found off the east coast of Sweden, about 200 km south of Stockholm.

Gotland is the largest island in the entire Baltic Sea, covering an area of about 3,000 km² which is surrounded by 800 km coastline. The beautiful island offers long beaches and has approximately 57,000 residents. The main town on Gotland is Visby.

How to Get to Gotland:

Gotland is easy to get to by airplane or ferry. If you go by air, there are direct flights to Visby from Stockholm with a duration of only 35 minutes. Popular airlines on this route are Golden Air and Skyway Express, and a return ticket starts around SEK 1,000 (EUR 115).

If you want to take a ferry to Gotland instead — a three hour journey — you can depart from Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn. The ferries to Gotland operate year-round. Some cruises across the Baltic Sea pass by Gotland as well.

Hotels on Gotland:

There are several hotels on Gotland; most are found in the town of Visby. I can recommend the Visby Hamnhotell as well as Hotel Villa Borgen. Both hotels are mid-priced and offer clean rooms with many amenities and a friendly atmosphere.

Activities on Gotland:

Well, the most popular thing to do on Gotland is definitely strolling along the long beaches, since the island is one of Sweden's best beach destinations. Bicycling and hiking lets you enjoy nature on the island and are popular as well.

Gotland also boasts 94 beautiful churches, most dating back to the 12th through 15th century.

Going into town is very interesting, too. Visby is actually a UNESCO World Heritage site in itself, and the town's historic city wall was selected as one of the Seven Wonders of Sweden, so don't miss it.

Fun Fact About Gotland:

Gotland is one of the sunniest places in Sweden.
