Your first step to finding student housing should be contacting the student housing company at your Swedish destination. You'll be put on a first come, first serve list for free dorm rooms and apartments.
Meanwhile, you should keep an eye on your destination's local newspaper listings or online apartment ads, e.g. on Craigslist. Most local rental ads will be in Swedish. Be prepared to move fast when you see a suitable accommodation: Call or e-mail the landlord right away. The demand for student housing is very high.
If you can't find suitable housing immediately, it's not unusual to first stay at local budget hotels and guesthouses for a couple of weeks or so, until you can move.
The university cities of Uppsala and Lund have numerous Nations, which are large groups of student organizations with available housing. In exchange, members of Nations are asked to volunteer or help by doing part-time local jobs, and be an active asset to the Nation.
Also, the Nations' nightlife (clubs, etc.) is legendary.
Exchange students in Sweden have it easier with finding housing - most schools offer to arrange for student housing for them. If you're studying through an exchange program, contact your school in Sweden for placement assistance.
