Getting to the starting point: From the the airport, take an airport bus, Flybussen (Phone 73 82 25 00), costing NOK 62 ($8.80) for a one-way trip into the center. Those who are driving to Trondheim take the express highway E6 north, going via Lillehammer all the way into Trondheim.
The starting point for our tour (which will take about 2 - 2 1/2 hours), is Trondheim's most prominent traffic circle, at the edge of which is the Tourist Office. In the middle of the circle rises the Trondheim Torg, a soaring granite column. At its top stands a statue of the Viking Olaf Tryggvason, founder (in A.D. 997) of Trondheim. Markings on the pavement, tracking the seasonal direction of the sun, define the column on which he stands as the world's largest sundial. Now walk north along the Munkegate (also called the "Champs-Elysées of Trondheim"). Its exceptional width was conceived as a firebreak during the rebuilding of Trondheim, after a fire in 1681 destroyed many of the city's wooden buildings. Our next stop is a 2-minute walk from here.
