Continue walking south on Nordre Gate and you will reach the smaller of the town's two medieval churches, Vår Frue Kirke (Our Lady's Church). Built in 1150 and enlarged twice (in 1686 and again in 1739), this bulky but dignified church is almost as wide as the nave of the church itself. The same goes for the bell tower, tacked onto the existing structure in 1739.
Regrettably, there were once at least 17 medieval churches in Trondheim. Now only this church and the cathedral, visited later in our walking tour, remain. This church has rare, regularly scheduled opening hours (Wed only, 11am-2pm) so if you'd like to go inside, plan accordingly. From the church, we now turn left onto Kongens Gate walking east.
