These wonderful royal gardens in Denmark offer peace and quiet for everyone - not just kings and queens - and let you get away from the busy city life of Copenhagen for a while. Here are the three most popular - and most beautiful - gardens for Denmark travelers.
During the Baroque period, French design had a strong influence on Danish castle gardens and gives them their special flair. They should definitely be a part of your trip if you are planning to visit the Copenhagen area. In summer, visit the Danish gardens on weekdays to avoid the crowds.
1. The King's Garden in Copenhagen
The Kings Garden (Kongens Have) at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen is the most popular. Although the garden has undergone several major changes during the years the three entrances have been preserved. In the park you will find the Hercules Pavillon, and the now famous statue of Hans Christian Andersen. In the summer, there is a puppet show for children and the lawns are crowded with sun-worshipers on warm days.Address: Øster Voldgade 4 A 1350 Copenhagen K. Phone: +45 3315 3286.
2. The Hørsholm Garden
The second choice is located in Hørsholm, approximately 45 minutes north-west of Copenhagen. This garden is also known as Hirschholm Garden & Museum. Here, Christian VI (1730-1746) built a new palace and garden. The palace was destroyed at the start of the nineteenth century and replaced by a beautiful church. The church, the garden, and castle pond have survived and are well worth a visit.Address: Sdr. Jagtvej 2, DK 2970 Hørsholm. Phone: +45 4586 0711.
3. Frederiksborg Castle Gardens
The gorgeous Renaissance and baroque gardens at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød (39 kilometers north of Copenhagen) are the third pick. Construction of the baroque garden started in 1720. Frederiksborg is a beautiful turreted castle surrounded by greens and water. It was used as a summer residence for the Danish royal family before becoming a national museum. After a period of neglect, a restoration program was started in 1995.Address: Frederiksborg Slot, 3400 Hillerød. Phone: +45 4826 0439.
